The News and Song:

On the first single and title song from his forthcoming album, The Wake Up, North Side Chicago rapper Jahzel refers to his city as both “witty” and “suffocating.” Premiered via HipHopDX and produced by Flawless Tracks, he reflects on the everyday struggles one can encounter living in the city, while maintaining his aspirations and making the sacrifices it takes to thrive. “Made what I could with limited options,” he raps, adding, “what’s meant for you is not meant for me, so I must conduct my own symphony.”

In addition to debuting the track, HipHopDX announced the album release date, cover art, and tracklist. Jahzel’s The Wake Up will be released October 7th via The Black Key Collective. Earlier this summer, Jahzel and his team launched a unique marketing strategy that has engaged current fans and incited new followers. “As a team, we decided to really fine tune how we acquire new fans,” Jahzel tells HipHopDX. “Tying it back to our project, The Wake Up, we wanted to use ‘triggers’ that are conducive to someone remembering the project and spreading info via word of mouth, so we decided to create breakfast/wake up events like Starbucks Meet & Greets, and McDonald’s breakfast Meet & Greets.”

I feel Chicago has been depicted as this ultra-violent city, comprised up of gun toting youth, who stand on corners, shooting at each other even over the slightest disagreement,” Jahzel says candidly. “This may be true in several cases, but is not the majority situation. The real story is much more complex than what has been told, and I would like to wake the world up to those stories, and the other side of life in Chicago as well.” The Wake Up follows last’s years free album, In God’s Image. “Jahzel’s future brightens with ever new release,” said HotNewHipHop, adding “we’re excited to hear more.”

Jahzel Background:

It’s no secret that Chicago is one of the epicenters of youth culture right now. While Drill music represents one element of the vibrant Chi-town scene, Jahzel, a native of the North Side/Uptown section of the city, balances soulfully tangible songwriting with trunk-rattling production. Though young, Jahzel boasts a track record that includes ghostwriting Top 40 hits for internationally renowned acts, a debut mixtape that featured platinum producer and friend KELil B, and JBar from Soulja Boy’s SODMG, and features with Datpiff, Fake Shore Drive, Thisis50, MTV2, and MTV’s Suckerfree Sunday. Last year, Jahzel released a free album, In God’s Image, with work from Maybach Music Group/Wale producer Tone P, a Chicago-heavy feature list that includes Noelz Vedere, Mathien, A-Cross, Meagan McNeal, and Whitney Rene, and a plethora of videos. With The Wake Up, Jahzel continues along this progressive path, as the album will be released on October 7th via The Black Key Collective.
