The Song:

Vallejo emcee Nef The Pharaoh is set to make huge waves in 2016. This week the 20 year-old is kicking off his first national tour as an opener on G-Eazy’s When It’s Dark Out Tour alongside A$AP Ferg andMarc E. Bassy, while also announcing a collaborative project with acclaimed producer CardoNeffy Got Wings. Debuted by The FADER, who praised the buzzing artist as a “legend-in-the-making,” the first single, “#Saydaat,” features Bay Area rap vet Philthy Rich. The banger is based on Bay Area slang, as Nef explains, “‘Say daat’ is like when you’re in church and the pastor says something and the people in the church say ‘Amen,’ we say ‘say daat.’ I’m from Vallejo, we make up words every day. You know, E-40‘s soil – his home ground – is Vallejo. We make up words by the minute – righteous.”

In December, Drake shouted out Nef The Pharaoh on Instagram after the two linked during the OVOgeneral’s trip California. Later in the month, Kehlani announced Nef The Pharaoh as the special guest for her sold out Tsunami Christmas event where he performed his hit single Big Tymin’,” an ode to theBig Tymers and Cash Money era that San Francisco’s 106 KMEL charted at #34 on their Top 106 Songs of 2015. Signed to E-40‘s Sick Wid It Records, Nef The Pharaoh delivered his debut retail release, a self-titled EP, in November to high praise.

“Nef’s sensibility isn’t exhausting,” Pitchfork stated in their review of the project. “The rapper can embody the obnoxious neighborhood bully, the smoothest game-spitter in school, and a conscientious father in one song all without spoiling the mood, or upstaging the beat.” XXL named Nef The Pharaoh’s self-titled EP one of the 20 Best Mixtapes and EP’s of 2015, while HotNewHipHop named him one of the Breakout Artists of 2015. Pigeons & Planes shared a study by start-up company Indify that recognized Nef The Pharaoh as one of 20 Artists About to Blow, According to Social Media Stats.

Fans can catch Nef The Pharaoh throughout January and February on G-Eazy‘s When It’s Dark Out Tour alongside A$AP Ferg and Marc E. Bassy.
