Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast 183

New Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast 183 Features Berner, Black Milk, Chevy Woods, Maxo Kream and Chevy Woods

The Podcast:

Leading this week’s Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast 183 is gravel-voiced Houston emcee Maxo Kream with his song “Big Worm,” a grime-tinged banger premiered last month by The FADER. “Big Worm” capitalized on the momentum following Maxo Kream’s four performances at SXSW and presages a big year for the young rapper. Next up we have Taylor Gang consigliere Chevy Woods with “Wit My Dogs,” a boisterous loose track with serious ATL connections, featuring production by Atlanta all-stars Nard & B and a guest appearance from trap-talker and 300 Entertainment signee Rich the Kid. “Wit My Dogs” continues a busy 2016 for Chevy Woods, who recently released the ambitious 4-song visual EP And The Story Goes…, which reflects on Chevy’s upbringing and transition to rap fame.  Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast 183 features a double dose of Taylor Gang. Following “Wit My Dogs” is Berner with “Still Rich,” a highlight from the Marijuana Maven’s 22nd LP Hempire, which came out last week. “Still Rich” features guest spots from Wiz Khalifa (who appears on four other Hempire tracks) and Lil Kim, who revisits the Junior M.A.F.I.A. “Get Money” beat for a show-stopping verse. Catch Berner on his Best Thang Smokin‘ tour, commencing on 4/20 with support from fellow Bay Area rappers Kool John and Anonymous That Dude. Following Berner comes Black Milk with “The Rebel,” a non-album outtake premiered by The FADER and recorded for The Rebellion Sessions, an instrumental jazz-funk odyssey featuring Milk’s band Nat Turner. Black Milk embarks upon a European tour with Nat Turner in May before returning to the United States for more dates over the Summer. Last month, the Hip-Hop world lost a legend when A Tribe Called Quest‘s five foot assassin Phife Dawg passed away at the far-too-young age of 45. We at Audible Treats can’t imagine how different our lives would be without A Tribe Called Quest being the soundtrack to so many poignant moments of our lives. As a tribute, we close this edition of the podcast with San Francisco DJ King Most‘s redirection of “Can I Kick It?, the classic track from People’s Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rhythm. In this redirection, King Most combines the acapella vocal track from “Can I Kick It?” with elements of two other megaclassics: “The Payback,” by James Brown and “Water No Get Enemy,” by Fela Kuti. Phife and Q-Tip fit seamlessly with the other two musical legends, as their nimble rhymes bob and weave within James Brown’s signature grunts, his band’s horns, Fred Thomas’s inimitable bassline and Fela’s liquid keys. RIP Phife Dawg, and may the music of A Tribe Called Quest endure like the music of James Brown and Fela Kuti.
